The Word of God - Spiritual Fuel

Core Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (Amp.) “Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action), So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Memory Verse:

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Discussion Questions:

  • What would you do if you were stranded on a dessert island? If you went without food for 30 days what do you think would happen to you?
  • Do you think it makes a difference what kind of food you eat? How does the food you eat affect your body?
  • If food is to the body as the Word is to the Spirit – do you think people in general are spiritually malnourished? Why or why not?
  • Do you feel like you get spiritually weak when you are not consistently in the Word? Does being “spiritually weak” affect how you make choices in your life? How?
  • Read the core scripture 2 Timothy 3:16-17. What are the 6 ways listed that the Word is for in our lives?

Bottom Line:

The Word of God is the foundation of our relationship with the Lord. In order to know God and grow in Him we have to know His character, His motives, and His plans for mankind. Reading the Word is what reveals the Father to us. Just like eating food causes our bodies to grow physically, reading the Word causes our spirit-man to grow – it’s our spiritual fuel. As we spend time in the Word we are giving God the opportunity to transform our thoughts, attitudes, and goals to line up with His. We don’t have to read 4 chapters of the Word a day to grow, we just need to read and meditate on a few verses a day to get the Word into our heart.
