January 31st & February 1st - Psalms lead us to listen

Wisdom: Psalms lead us to listen

Core Scripture:
Psalm 49:1-20

Memory Verse:
James 1:5 (NIV) "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

Discussion Questions:
  • What does the Psalmist say is foolishness or deceit when it comes to money? What does the Psalmist say is wise?
  • How does this Psalm inspire us to listen to wisdom? How does it show us the importance of listening to wisdom?
  • What are some of the sources of wisdom that we have access to? Which of these do you normally listen to? Which do you need to listen to?
  • How can you follow the lead of this Psalm by listening to wisdom? How should you act in response to this wisdom?
Bottom Line:
  • This Psalm revolves around the topic of riches and how people are so prone to put their trust in them. But instead of putting our trust in riches, the psalmist says we should put our trust in God.
  • The first step to listening to wisdom is that we must admit we don't know everything. Then we must look to the sources of true wisdom.
  • Psalms prompt us to listen for wisdom, the kind of wisdom that will make our lives better, more significant, and most of all, more like Christ's life. So let us humble ourselves and choose to listen to the wisdom that God wants to speak into our lives.
