October 18 & 19 - "One-Eyed Jack"

Core Scriptures:
Matthew 5:33-37

Memory Verse:
Matthew 5:37 (NIV) "Simply let your 'Yes' be 'yes', and your 'No', 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."

Discussion Questions:
  1. What law was Jesus completing in this teaching? Why did it need to be completed?
  2. What new spin did Jesus put on this law? What did he saw was at the root of oaths and swearing?
  3. Why did Jesus speak about letting your "yes" be "yes" and your "no" be "no"? How was this a problem in our lives?
  4. How can we speak so that truth "smokes" consequence? What words should we use? What words should we avoid? What changes do you need to make with your words starting this week? How can this group help to hold you accountable to this?
Bottom Line:
  • The truth is that manipulative smokescreens eventually clear, and people will see what type of person you really are, no matter how slippery or religious your vocabulary is. As Jesus taught us, absolute honesty "smokes" a false front.
  • As representatives of Jesus who try to live out the truth that God's Holy Spirit empowers us to change the world, we need to steer clear of false advertising and religious phrases that are not true.
  • Prayer is one of the worst places that we tend to use religious lace. Absolute honesty smokes a false front, and so if we use these words in prayer or elsewhere, we need to make sure they're true.
  • What would it take for you to put your name on the list of untruthful people? Absolute honesty can smoke a false front in your life and my life, if we will stop playing the one-eyed jack.
